On Saturday May 3, 190km per hour winds and 3.5 metre waves ripped through the most densely populated area of Myanmar (Burma). While the ruling military junta in Myanmar have assessed the death toll at 84,537 with 53,836 still missing, independent experts have recently estimated the number of dead and missing at 200,000. Around 2.4 million people have been affected, and the threat of disease outbreak could mean many more.
Austcare is providing assistance through partner organisation ActionAid International. Together, Austcare and ActionAid is supplying food, temporary shelter, clothing, blankets and first aid supplies. Read more
Landmine Action
Landmines are a global menace that can and are being eradicated. Landmine Action refers to the global efforts being made to eliminate the landmine problem through increasing support for the 1997 Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Treaty, the destruction of stockpiles, landmine clearance, educating communities at risk and assistance to landmine survivors.
Since 1989, Austcare has implemented landmine action projects in Afghanistan, Angola, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cambodia, and Mozambique. Austcare has provided a range of assistance including landmine clearance, the rehabilitation of landmine survivors, and awareness-raising among communities at risk, and we continue to grow this aspect of our work.
